Oxford Policy Institute
working for better public services

  Guidance notes

OPI’s central interest is in the incentives and institutions that motivate public sector performance and publishes articles which reflect this focus. Articles might highlight a current or emerging issue, develop a topic for further research, describe a piece of theory or offer some empirical evidence.

  • OPI working papers are peer reviewed articles at the analytical level found in academic journals of approximately 7000-10000 words.  OPI working papers are given an ISBN number and are listed in international bibliographic databases for citation.
  • Policy briefs are peer reviewed discussion papers focusing on the implications of a particular issue for public policy primarily intended for a professional practitioner audience.  They are of a high analytical level but are written in accessible language avoiding jargon. These papers are typically between 4000 – 5000 words. They are given an ISSN number.
  • Personal view articles are at an analytical level higher than a newspaper column but more accessible than a journal article.  Authors may use this as a platform to share ideas and selected findings of research they are developing.  Articles are typically between 1000- 1500 words in length.

The views expressed are those of the authors, not of Oxford Policy Institute.

OPI maintains an open submission policy and encourages articles to be submitted for consideration to editor@opi.org.uk.
