Oxford Policy Institute
working for better public services

Research OPI's research is intended to inform policy with evidence about how institutions influence the behaviour of political, economic and social agents in different settings.

  Political organisation and institutions
At the core of a well-functioning society is a complex set of political institutions, organisations and actors that work to advance a series of public goals.  A clearer understanding of how these individuals and organisations are motivated provides the basis for understanding how policy is made and whether it is likely to contribute to sustained economic growth and better living standards.  Research in this area covers the political economy of government and the politics and anatomy of state power.

  Public administration
Political organisations depend on administrative systems to realise their intentions.  Their design and performance are critical components of good government.  Research in this area covers the measurement of public sector performance and innovations in public administration.

  Public services
The organisation and delivery of public services such as health, education and justice have a clear and direct influence on the quality of life within society.  The outcomes from these services both influence and result from the administrative framework in which they operate. Research in this area focuses on the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of publicly funded services whether delivered by the public or the private sector.
